How to Get a New Car Key

Remember those big clubs made to go across your car’s steering wheel so it would lock in place? They existed largely because it was all to easy for someone to jimmy the door, and just as easy for a thief to hotwire the car. Naturally, if there’s a heavy lock on the steering wheel, a thief wouldn’t even bother. The physical wheel lock, while not quite a thing of the past, is seen less and less these days. Transponder keys are now standard in new models. These are keys which contain an RF transmitter sending out a unique code to a matching receiver inside its appropriate lock. Not only does this work for the door lock, but for the ignition switch, as well. A transponder key makes a car impossible to hotwire. Because the signal is so low, it only operates if the key is actually inserted into the lock.

The unique nature of a transponder key also makes it very difficult for them to be properly duplicated. Even if the physical structure of the key is exact, it won’t work out the specific transponder code made for that specific car. Because of this, transponder keys tend to be somewhat more expensive to replace, should they be lost. You’ll also need to supply your VIN number to get a new key that will work with your car.

While they may cost a little extra, transponder keys are worth the price. These keys make it so much more difficult for your car to be broken into or stolen. While no security system is entirely unbreakable, a transponder key makes it so difficult to take a car that it’s not worth the trouble for a thief to consider taking it.
